Parent Letter from Superintendent - July 28, 2020

July 28, 2020

Parents and Guardians,

I would like to start off by thanking each family that has provided input through the multiple surveys our district has published throughout the summer.  Your input has been invaluable as we make plans for the safe reopening of school in August.  KASD continues to analyze and implement the ever-changing rules and regulations put forth by Governor Tom Wolf, the PA Department of Health, and the CDC.  This guidance, along with the information provided through our surveys, has informed our educational offerings and plans.

Kane Area School District is pleased to be able to offer students three education delivery models for the upcoming school year.  Parents can choose from the following options:

  • Full time/5 days per week in-person instruction- students attend school following our traditional daily schedule with added safety protocols in place.
  • Kane Area Cyber Academy- students attend classes online, taught by KASD teachers, through Google Classroom and Google Meet.  Both middle and high school students will follow our traditional daily schedule as they log in to class remotely.  Elementary students will receive instruction through a blended model that will offer remote learning through live/recorded lessons as well as self-paced learning opportunities.
  • Kane FLEX program- students attend school remotely following a self-paced online program.  Courses are offered through a partnership with Warren County School District.

According to our most recent survey, we expect approximately 80% of our students to return for in-person instruction on August 25th.  However, a significant number of families have requested an online option which led to the development of both the Kane Area Cyber Academy and the Kane FLEX program.  For those interested in either of these options, please review the attached flyers that provide more detailed information on both programs.

Anyone interested in signing up for Kane Area Cyber Academy should fill out the registration form located at the end of the flyer.  Completed forms, one per student, must be returned to the appropriate school office based on each student’s upcoming grade level.  Families interested in the Kane FLEX program should contact Mr. Jay Israel at 837-6821, ext. 4203, to be registered.

For those students opting to participate in either the Kane Area Cyber Academy or the Kane FLEX program please note the following:

  • The registration deadline for both programs is August 7th.
  • Due to the logistical and scheduling challenges involved in managing multiple platforms, we are asking students commit to their choice for a minimum of one marking period.
  • A material pick up day is scheduled for August 24th from 8:00 a.m-6:00 p.m. for those choosing either of the online options.  Course materials and devices will be distributed at that time and both the student and a parent/guardian must be present.

On behalf of the teachers, staff, and administration of Kane Area School District, thank you for your continued support as we strive to continue to provide students with an engaging, safe and challenging learning environment, now delivered over multiple platforms.  Take care and stay safe.

Sincerely,

Brock R. Benson

Superintendent
